Registration has officially opened for the 14th annual Highway Africa Conference. The conference is the world’s largest gathering of African journalists. The conference will take place at Rhodes University’s Eden Grove Complex, 5-7 July 2010.

Background

Highway Africa is a project of Rhodes University, in partnership with the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), and the Department of Communication (South Africa) with the support of several partners, development agencies and sponsors. The conference has been at the centre of Africa’s debates on journalism and new media for over a decade.

The 2010 Theme: African Voices in the Global Media Space

Highway Africa Conference 2010 will be both a celebration and an interrogation of African journalism and media and how these are opening up and expanding spaces for engagement. With globalisation being an accepted reality of modern society, the debate now is about what are the rules of engagement in this globalised world.

The conference will also look at training programmes that tertiary institutions and media organisations should develop in order to adequately equip the ideal 21st Century media professional.  Discussions will evaluate African voices in the global blogosphere as well as the technologies and applications developed by Africa that contribute to the diverse voices in the global media arena.

 Reporting Development Forum

Incorporated in the main conference will be the 2nd Reporting Development Forum (RDF). The RDF will bring together Africa’s top media professionals, communication for development experts, government communication staff and academics to debate issues including: Media and Africa’s development agenda; Business and Social Sustainability; and the Business of the Media in Africa
